Practice what you preach

Ryan at Smile Politely has a commentary on some of the houses local pastors occupy. As is often the case, what pastors preach and what they actually do are oftentimes inconsistent. And it isn't just the high profile ones who are guilty.

I thought that "commentary" was a cheap shot. I know for a fact that one of those pastors cited has lived in his house for 30 years and raised his kids there. It has appreciated accordingly.

Interesting. Inflation will do that to some, but what about the newer half-million dollar homes? I am a bit more skeptical about those.

I just read that article and the comments posted with it. My first thought towards everyone defending those pastors was this:

If your doctor told you to quit smoking because it's so bad for your health, but then you saw your doctor outside puffing away on a cigarette, wouldn't you feel like your doctor was being hypocritical?

To me, that scenario is pretty much identical to the pastor in the half-million dollar home scenario. The pastor and the doctor are both giving you guidance on how to better your life - one in the physical sense, and the other in the spiritual sense. You are led to believe neither of those people would mislead you and that they would also follow their own advice.

For lack of a better way of saying it, you've gotta practice what you preach. Or else stop preaching it.
