My mother was about the same age as Betty Draper in 1961 and I slightly older than the Draper daughter, so I have many memories of that time period. Here are the things from that time period that stand out in my mind:
girdles
pointy brassieres
sanitary napkin belts
candy cigarettes
frozen pot pies
Jiffy Pop Popcorn
special occasion corsages
big boat, gas guzzler cars, especially convertibles
extra food/water supply in basement or bomb shelter
Mogan David wine at parent hosted parties
There's only one thing in that list that I might like to have back in my life. One hint: it sure as heck isn't the sanitary napkin belt.
special occasion corsages?
ReplyDeleteCorsages (worn on shoulder) were a big thing around our house for special occasions in the 1960s. If mom got one for Mother's Day, anniversary, birthday, etc, I would get one too. Who even wears big corsages now except perhaps at weddings?
ReplyDeleteJiffy Pop!! Pops right in the package and all over the house...
ReplyDeleteoff: yeah, but it was so much fun watching the aluminum unfurl.
ReplyDeleteOff forgot to say I enjoy your blog. It's always good for a chuckle or two. I do not care for xmas sweaters, either. Jean Bice needs to retire!
ReplyDeletePointy brassiere? We once took an entire bag of Helga pointy brassieres and hung them on the trees of a friend at about 2 am sort of like Christmas ornaments. We never laughed so hard sober before. His yard looked like an ad for Victoria's Secret circa 1957.
ReplyDeletememphis: Thanks for the idea for the next Festival of Trees fundraiser this holiday season.
